Personal Background
Helen is a native Victorian who feels we live in the ideal place to enjoy and develop her artistic abilities.. She combines her hobbies of travel, walking, photography and art. It's a great lifestyle living on Vancouver Island.

Art Background
Helen took art in school but did not feel successful and did not continue in this field. She trained as a teacher, then took time out to have a family. Her daughter, Sheila, showed an interest in art and took classes in oil painting with Ivah Bryant. Helen joined the classes too and enjoyed them so much that she went back to university and received a degree in Art Education. She worked as a teacher-on-call, developing programs as an Art Specialist. She loved encouraging children to grow as artists but felt frustrated that she did not have enough time to develop her own art. Helen did manage to fit in classes in Pastels and Watercolour. She belonged to the Gilded Palate Art Club and the Victoria Society of Artists and exhibited with them.
Three years ago Helen retired and scheduled art back into her life. She has focused on her first love - Oils and is excited to see a new style evolving. Her work reflects her love of the outdoors. She prefers to paint Plein Air, but living on Vancouver Island which is subject to the wet winters, she needs to take photographs for referral material.
She now teaches art to private students and occasionally volunteers in the schools in her grandchildren's classes. She finds that teaching others stimulates new ideas and
adds to her creativity.
